Aptly called the “Costa del Golf”, the Costa del Sol offers a selection of approximately sixty golf courses, and picking the 5 best from among them is never easy. There is a wide selection of choices in course styles and tee time price ranges, and a large number of accommodation options.

Other points of interest include more than 100 km of glittering shoreline with innumerable beaches from which to choose, Moorish castles, and charming cities like Marbella and Puerto Banus where you will find an exciting nightlife and world-class shopping.

If you are planning a golf holiday in the Costa del Sol here is a selection of 5 of the very best courses which you should try and play while you are there;

Alcaidesa
Peter Alliss and Clive Clark designed this 18-hole, Par 71 course located in the westernmost area of the Costa del Sol and offers views of Gibraltar and the Atlas Mountains in Africa. Skirting the coast, links style, including 4 beach side holes, Alcaidesa demands straight shots and the skill to cope with the windy conditions frequently prevalent at this location. The pro-shop is where you can rent clubs and carts and schedule lessons, and there is also a driving range and both chipping and putting greens.

Alhaurin
Situated in the Mijas Mountains, the 18 hole, Par 72 Alhaurin is another work of art by Seve Ballesteros. It is essential to make accurate shots on the well-kept greens and fairways, because balls that go astray may be difficult to find in the natural rough areas. Additionally, the many water hazards and sand traps will need to be avoided! You must be in good shape or have a reliable buggy to successfully traverse this course that affords any number of views of the mountains and ocean.

On the positive side, the tees generously provide up to 6 tee-off positions. At the clubhouse you will find a bar and restaurant; a golf school; club, trolley and buggy rentals, a driving range along with practice bunkers and greens.

Atalaya
Atalaya was established in 1968 and is currently the headquarters of the PGA in Europe. It includes two well-maintained 18-hole, Par 72 courses as well as an extremely popular golf and country club that features outstanding facilities. The course is situated between Marbella and Estepona, is home to one of the largest driving ranges in Spain, and provides golf lessons in various languages.

Tall pines and lush vegetation surround the Old Course that features a flat, wide course with elevated greens; the New Course is not as flat, but has some trees and features panoramic views of the mountains and ocean. The four putting greens, a short game area and the driving range are available for those who wish to practice, and it is possible to sign up for lessons at the pro shop.

Baviera
The Par 71 Baviera is located in the foothills of the Sierra de la Almijara, close to Caleta de Velez Malaga. A variety of clubs and techniques will be needed to complete this course of vast greens and multiple obstacles. The course is suitable for people with all handicaps. There are some water hazards, but if you take care with your shots, it is possible to end up with a low score due to the large greens and wide fairways.

The site affords wonderful mountain and sea landscapes at every turn. At the pro shop you can rent electric and manual trolleys, buggies and clubs and you can practice all you want on the putting and chipping greens near the driving range.

Flamingos
Flamingos, a 5,883 meter, Par 72 course features a number of cypresses, oranges, jacarandas, pines, olives, and chestnuts, and distinctive crushed marble bunkers while offering panoramic Mediterranean views, including Gibraltar. Tuscan garden design was the inspiration for the course, and you will encounter classical style statues and marble bridges as you play. Though every hole is challenging, the front nine are the most intense.

The course has the standard golf equipment and a 100 tee driving range. Gorgeous scenery can be viewed from the course and the clubhouse, which houses a terrace bar and coffee shop, as well as the renowned La Cantina, which offers fine dining.

There is no doubt that the Costa del Sol is one of the best golfing areas in the world and choosing the best 5 courses from such a prestigious collection is no easy task. However, we think that our selection will provide many memorable days of first-class Costa del Sol golf for anyone.

Don’t for get that these courses are highly popular, especially during the peak holiday season, so make sure that you book your Costa del Sol tee times well in advance of your trip.
