Great Costa del Sol Day Trips – Ronda

If you are on holiday on the Costa Del Sol and want to plan some great days out while you are there, a trip to Ronda should be high on your list.

The historic town of Ronda lies inland from Malaga, about 45 minutes by car through the Sierra Bermeja Mountains. It is ideally situated for a day trip, and the journey is spectacular in itself. It is one of the best and most visited of the famed pueblos blancos, or white villages, that are scattered around this part of Almeria.

Ronda is perched on the edge of the deep El Tajo Gorge; at the bottom, the Rio Guadalevín runs through the centre of the gorge. Due to its fortress-like position, Ronda was one of the last Moorish towns to fall to the Catholic Kings.

Now the town is a major tourist attraction because of its panoramic views and narrow cobbled streets. Ronda is indeed a pueblo blanco; the houses are dazzlingly white, with wrought iron balconies and ornamental grills at the windows. Sightseeing is best done on foot, but it can be difficult for anyone who doesn’t have good mobility.

The Puente Nuevo Bridge, which crosses the 100 metre deep gorge, is a great place to view the surrounding mountains while the ruined Arco del Cristo, which is just down a steep slope from the bridge, provides some great views of the old town from below.

Bullfighting is a popular activity here, and even if you are not an ardent bullfighting enthusiast the bullring, built in 1784, is worth a visit when there are no corridas. There is a museum, a good gift shop and a chance to see ‘behind the scenes’ of this popular spectacle.

Solmar Villas provide cheap Costa Del Sol villas for anyone planning a holiday in this part of Spain.
